  • Two Antique African Money Bracelets from the 16th-19th Centuries.   Nicely decorated all over the outsides.
Very good condition with a nice brass patina.
These could polish up to be nicely wearable.  About 2 1/2 to 2 5/8 inches interior diameter.   At 3-4 ounces each, they are not much heavier than a big watch.
Bracelets of brass and other copper alloys were used as wearable prestige items of wealth and as currency in Western Africa from the late 15th to early 20th Centuries.
Identification from Charles J. Opitz (2000) “An Ethnographic Study of Traditional Money” and from the Hamill Gallery 2003 Exhibition.
I’ve had these in my collection for over 25 years, but I was not the original collector and have no additional data.  We’re downsizing, and it’s time for me to move my collection on to others.
I ship by US Priority Mail and can combine shipment for auctions closing during the same weekend – if you let me know you are bidding on other items.
