Offered is a first edition, first (and only) printing of “Sociological Survey of the Negro Population of Springfield, Mass.” edited by William N. DeBerry and published in 1940 by the Dunbar Community League out of Springfield, Massachusetts.  A left-stapled pamphlet measuring 5″ by 8″ and containing 20 pages including front and rear covers. With a Foreword by William N. DeBerry, Executive Secretary of the Dunbar Community League (reading in part, “A sociological survey of the Negro population of Springfield was made in 1921 by the St. John’s Institutional Activities, now known as the Dunbar Community League. The report of this survey, published in March, 1922, contained much valuable information regarding the colored people of Springfield and has since been widely used as a reference for this purpose. The need of more up-to-date knowledge of the facts and conditions then studied, and the need, as well, of authentic information regarding such developments and changes as have since taken place in the social status of the group are the motives that prompted the present survey, sponsored and conducted by the Dunbar Community League in 1939”).  The contents of the Study are: Editorial from the Springfield Sunday Republican, February 11, 1940 entitled “The Negro in Springfield”; Population; Industrial Status (with list of occupations and the number employed); Churches; Fraternal, Benevolent and Social Organizations; School Attendance (with table); Interest in Politics; Disease and Mortality; Housing; Crime; Recipients of Welfare and Other Forms of Public Aid; Business and Professional Activity; Negroes in Positions of Public Service; Race Relations; Conclusion; Appendix.
